So what is all the MyDoom thing about? posted by Andrés on Saturday, July 31, 2004 Urs Hoelzle (Vice President of operations and Google fellow) gave us the official explanation regarding the Mydoom attackings. What really happened was that the MyDoom.M variant requests X queries from Google and other Search Engines causing traffic problems but luckly Googlers detected the users infected and blocked them.
Some innocent users had problems searching with Google and they saw "ERROR -27 page", well this was only an impossible message for normal users to understand. Googlers didn't know that one day they had to publish such message to users. Everything is fine now and it's not the end of the world.
Some users might think that "a virus can do this to Google?", well.. the virus is like an ant in front of Google. The thing is that such virus infected multiple computers giving the computers infected the same task which was making X requests to Google and obviously these turned to a problem.
Example: 200 infected computers with MyDoom.M = 200 x (X queries per computer infected) = (gigantic value) per second. This value obviously will give problems for anything.

Some googlers will be millionaires posted by Andrés on Friday, July 30, 2004 As we all know, Google is expected to launch their IPO. There is a possibility that Googlers (Google employes) will be millionaires because each Googler has stock options and the price for each share is cheaper than the price that will be announced for each share which is expected to be between 108 and 138 dollars per share.
If googlers buy stocks from Google at a considerable lower price, they can even win more than 1000% by selling the shares in the future. Well some Googlers have more privileges than others (the ones that recently started to work at Google, the old guys)
The only concern here is that if Googlers start to receive a lot of income, they can quit and create their own businesses. |
